April 2008 (SOLD OUT)
The majestic plain of Chajnantor at 5000 m altitude in the Chilean Atacama Desert. This is where ESO, together with its North American, East Asian and Chilean partners, is building the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA), an ensemble of 66 antennas. The APEX telescope and the Array Operation Site Technical Building are seen in the distance. Further out, the characteristic shape of the Licancabur volcano is clearly visible on the left. The photograph nicely shows that this wide plain is far from being flat.
