February 2014

Dear Fellow Communicators,

We invite you to join us on a pioneering journey, following our expedition crew members, four world-renowned astrophotographers as they travel to our sites in Chile. They will be equipped with powerful Ultra HD tools provided by the technology’s front runners and with a clear goal: to bring you the best views of ESO you have ever seen! Ultra HD is a striking high-quality format, with four times as many pixels as HD.

You can follow their progress on our ESO Ultra HD Expedition blog or via the dedicated Twitter hashtag #ESOultraHD.

The ESO Ultra HD Expedition is supported by the following technology partners: Canon, Kids Of All Ages, Novoflex, Angelbird, Vixen, eMotimo, Pelicase, Magic Multi Media and LRTimelapse.

The expedition will provide plenty of new Ultra HD footage and Fulldome footage (for planetariums) as part of our efforts to regularly deliver free content in Ultra HD (as the first scientific organisation to do so).

Also this month, we’d like to invite you to take part in the first edition of the Photo Nightscape Awards, the first international photo nightscape awarded in France. The competition is organised by Ciel et Espace Photos, the picture agency of Association Française d’Astronomie (AFA). ESO is one of the partners and it is offering the first prize in the pro competition — a trip to Paranal, Chile, home of the Very Large Telescope! Learn more here.

This month we also welcome a new ESO Photo Ambassador, Carlos A. Duran. Carlos joined ESO in 2004, and since then he has been working for the Atacama Pathfinder EXperiment, APEX. Here he became fascinated by the Chilean desert and has developed a deep passion for photography.

We are also welcoming an Outreach Partner Organisation, the Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics of the University of Lisbon (CAAUL)!

For those of you interested in applying for or promoting job opportunities at ESO, we are now promoting them on Facebook, via status updates and a dedicated Facebook tab, and on Twitter (#ESOjobs), in addition to our LinkedIn channel.

Let’s reach new heights in astronomy together,

Lars Lindberg Christensen (lars@eso.org)
Head, ESO education and Public Outreach Department (ePOD)
