Frame Data Release

FLAMES SV Data Products

The data being released consist of all the raw and calibration data taken during the FLAMES Dry Runs (24 Jan - 03 Feb, 2003), along with fits files of quick-look reduced spectra for most of the science frames. The data reduction was carried out in an automatic manner (as part of the testing of various operational procedures) and on a best-effort basis (by the astronomers present at the telescope during the Dry Runs). The pipeline software tools available at this time were still under final stages of testing, and they had not been optimized for any specific scientific goal.

It is thus emphasized that the reduced spectra released here are mainly intended to allow users a quick-look evaluation of the science quality of the data, thus helping the planning for their most effective scientific exploitation. Users who intend to make use of the data are expected to carefully check the quality of these reduced spectra and re-process them if deemed necessary for the best achievement of their scientific goals.

ESO pipeline support (i.e. delivery by the Data Flow Operations group of pipeline products to those users awarded telescope time in Service Mode) for the UVES-fibre mode of FLAMES will be phased in during Period 71.   ESO pipeline support for FLAMES GIRAFFE will be phased in by the end of Period 71, starting with the MEDUSA mode. A brief summary of the calibration plan for each instrument is available on-line from the DFO Pipeline-Status web page.   A first version of the Geneva release of the GIRAFFE Off-Line Data Reduction Software is expected to be available to the interested users directly from the Swiss FLAMES Consortium (Observatoire de Geneve - Universite` de Lausanne) at the beginning of Period 71.



Feedback from the users of SV data is an essential aspect of the VLT Science Verification process. Users are warmly encouraged to send their comments to the VLT Program Scientist (arenzini@eso.org) and to inform him about the progress in the scientific analysis of the data. A copy of the papers submitted for publication would also be appreciated, and will be treated confidentially if not otherwise indicated by the authors.

Naming Convention:

[Data.Summary] :     offers you a detailed report of all the frames contained in each of the Data Packages

TargetName-Instr.Mode     identifies a raw+calibration Data Package;

r.TargetName-Instr.Mode     identifies the corresponding processed Data Package

Data Processing:

Data processing followed basic and generic prescriptions: bias subtraction, flat fielding, extraction, and wavelength calibration. In the case of Medusa/Ifu observations, bias subtraction was done using a master bias frame obtained by averaging 3 bias frames, whereas the flat-fielding step was performed using a single normalized flat-field image. In the case of UVES-fibre frames, a new Calibration Database (hence new master calibration frames) was created at the very beginning of the Dry Runs for all 3 UVES settings (Red520, Red580, and Red860). For all instrument modes, spectra have always been extracted with average extraction. The Data Summaries provided below for each program report detailed information and comments on every dataset (including possible technical problems encountered during their execution).

Few tips are provided here to help the interested user to extract the most relevant information from the image headers.

The Chemical Signature of Different Stellar Populations in the LMC      [Data.Summary]

FLAMES Medusa+UVES observations in the Large Magellanic Cloud were taken in 2 Medusa set-ups (HR13 and HR14) and 2 UVES settings (Red580 and Red860, configuration Uves-8) for a total of 15 hours of integration (72% completion rate). The spectral coverage is the same for all stars: 612-662 nm for all Medusa targets (Red Giant Branch and Clump stars), and 480-960 nm for the UVES targets (Long Period Variable stars). The fibre configuration for Medusa is the same for all the Medusa frames, whereas the FLAMES-UVES fibres have been allocated to different targets (sky positions included) in each exposure.

Massive Kinematic Study of NGC 5128 using its Planetary Nebulae and Globular Clusters as Test Probes   [Data.Summary]

FLAMES Medusa+UVES combined mode was used in order to obtain spectra of as many of the catalogued planetary nebulae (PN, cf Huy et al. 1993) in NGC 5128 as possible, together with spectra of catalogued globular clusters. Observations were taken in one Medusa set-up (LR3, to cover H-beta and [O III] lines at a resolution of 7500) and one UVES setting (Red580 to cover the spectral range from H-beta to H-alpha, in the configuration Uves-8) for a total of 7 hours of integration (79% completion rate). The spectral coverage is the same for all targets: 450-508 nm for all Medusa targets (PNe), and 480-680 nm for the UVES targets (GCs). The region was divided into three fields: NGC5128_NE, NGC5128_Centre and NGC_SW, of which the Centre one had 5 different FLAMES-Medusa set-ups in order to include the bulk of the PN. Fibre allocations can be checked by viewing and/or downloading the submitted Field Charts.

Mass Loss in Globular Cluster Red Giant Stars   [Data.Summary]

FLAMES Medusa+UVES observations of the Galactic globular cluster NGC2808 were taken in three Medusa high-resolution set-ups (HR2, HR12, HR14) and one UVES setting (Red580, configuration Uves7+1) for a total of 4 hours of integration (100% completion rate). Main targets of these observations were about 100 stars of the Red Giant Branch, in the magnitude interval V=13.2-16.5mag, within a radius of about 7 arcmin from the cluster center. The spectral coverage is the same for all the targets: 385-405 nm (HR2), 582-615 nm (HR12), 638-662 nm (HR14) for all Medusa targets (red giants), and 480-680 nm for the UVES targets (the brightest objects).

Geometric Distances of the Galactic Globular Cluster NGC 2808   [Data.Summary]

FLAMES Medusa+UVES observations of the Galactic globular cluster NGC2808 were taken in one Medusa high-resolution set-up (HR9) and one UVES setting (Red520, configuration Uves-6) with the aim of deriving its geometric distance via the comparison of proper motions and radial velocities. The total integration time was of 5.5 hours (80% completion rate). The spectral coverage is the same for all the targets: 514-536 nm for all Medusa targets, and 420-620 nm for the UVES targets (horizontal branch stars). Different targets were observed during each exposure (cf the Colour-Magnitude Diagram for the selected targets).

Elemental Abundances in NGC 2243   [Data.Summary]

FLAMES Medusa+UVES observations of stars in the open cluster NGC2243. These were taken in two Medusa high-resolution set-ups (HR14 and HR15, for the H-alpha and the LiI line) and two UVES settings (Red580 and Red860, configuration Uves-8) for a total of 4 hours of integration (100% completion rate). The spectral coverage is the same for all the targets: 638-697 nm for all Medusa targets, and 480-960 nm for the UVES targets (the brightest targets).

Kinematics of Distant Galaxies from FLAMES-GIRAFFE IFU Mode  [Data.Summary]

FLAMES IFU+UVES observations of the galaxy cluster MS1054-03 (at a redshift of z=0.83) were taken in one low-resolution set-up (LR6) and in one of the UVES settings (Red860) for a total of 9 hours of integration (75% completion rate). The nominal spectral coverage is the same for all the targets: 644-718 nm for all Medusa targets (mainly late-type galaxies Sc-Sd, merger systems and post-starburst spiral galaxies), and 680-960 nm for the UVES targets (four elliptical galaxies and one merging system, all brighter than 21mag in I-band). Two pointings (cf the submitted Field Charts), offset by 2", were observed in order to cover the two targets in the sample larger than 3".

Dark and Stellar Mass in Late-Type Dwarfs   [Data.Summary]

FLAMES IFU observations of the late-type dwarf galaxy NGC1310 were taken in one IFU low-resolution set-up (LR4) for a total of 5.5 hours of integration (100% completion rate). 5 IFU were allocated at a radius of 1 scale length and 10 at a radius of 2 scale lengths (cf Field Chart #1). The spectral coverage is 501.5-583.1 nm. For calibration purposes, K Giants in M67 (cf Field Chart #2) have also been observed with the same IFU set-up to serve as spectral templates.

Activity and Angular Momentum Evolution of Low-Mass Members of the Orion Nebular Cluster   [Data.Summary]

FLAMES Medusa observations of low-mass members of the Orion Nebular Cluster were taken in two Medusa high-resolution set-ups (HR14 and HR15) for a total of 5 hours of integration (62% completion rate). The HR15 set of OBs had higher priority and has been completed, whereas for the HR14 set-up only one exposure out of 4 has been executed. The spectral coverage is 638.3-679.7 nm. Take a look at the RA and DEC distribution of the targets to have an idea of which objects have been observed (those circled in black).

Dynamical Study of Elliptical Galaxies   [Data.Summary]

FLAMES IFU observations of the elliptical galaxy NGC3585 were taken in one IFU low-resolution (LR5) and one IFU high-resolution set-up (HR12) for a total of 5 hours of integration (100% completion rate). The scientific objective is to accurately determine the velocity dispersion and infer some constraint on the Ellipsoid of velocity dispersions in the central part of the galaxy. The spectral coverage is 574.1-652.4 nm for the low-res spectra, and 582.1-614.6 nm for the high-res spectra. IFU allocations can be viewed from the submitted Field Chart.
