Pelicano: La Silla base camp, Oct.1966
Quebrada Pelicano is narrow valley at the foot of La Silla. The small oasis at the center provides the Observatory''s water. ESO installed its original base camp in Pelicano, seen here soon after its construction, in Oct.1966. Today, the main access gate to the Observatory is still in the middle of the oasis.
