Pelicano: La Silla base camp, Oct.1966
Pelicano is a small oasis nested in a valley at the foot of La Silla. Its wells provide the Observatory''s water. ESO installed its original base camp in Pelicano, seen here soon after its construction, in Oct.1966. Today, the main access gate to the Observatory is still in the middle of the oasis.
