Extracted Observing Reports for 171.B-0588(A): Night information

Telescope: Kueyen (UT2)
Instrument: FLAMES

Created on 2004-04-07 15:48:14

This is a summary of night log information extracted for all those nights which got observations for your run and which are contained in this data delivery.

This information has been extracted from a database which contains information ingested during the nights. The database is also maintained to reflect e.g. a posteriori updates of the OB grading.

This report is structured into two parts:
- breakdown by nights (this page)
- breakdown by OBs.

This page is an extraction of general night information for all nights with OBs in this data delivery. Usually an OB will produce files but there are exceptions, e.g. when an OB is aborted due to degrading conditions. Therefore there might be entries in this nightlog summary which do not correspond to any of the files contained in your data package.

On the other hand there is a small chance of having OBs or files delivered without nightlog entries. The most likely cause could be operational problems during the night.

Extra FLAMES-UVES calibrations were taken as the FLAMES-UVES science frames were shifted with respect to the calibration images by 3 pixels for the 580-nm FLAMES-UVES plate 2 setting. The pending calibration from yesterday (1.5 pixel shift for plate-1 580-nm setting) was also done.
Tests were made in the afternoon, taking FLAMES-UVES 580-nm wavelength calibrations, then moving to FLAMES-UVES 860-nm, then back to 580-nm etc. It was found that the change in the cross disperser produced non-repeatability in X-dispersion direction of upto 10 pixels (not seen when running the UVES_red_tec_cdtest template that does not switch the crossdisperser). The test was then done with UVES (format check with CD#3, then CD#4, CD#3, CD#4 etc). The shifts also appear in standalone UVES. PPRS-11899 updated.
Following tests were run during the day; LampLevTest, MotorCurTest, SlitLinTest
UVES 580-nm cross disperser was put in simulation during the night-time observations.

GIRAFFE HR grating may show shift of 1.0-1.5 pixels in X-dispersion direction. PPRS-12239 submitted.
Due to the very bad seeing in the beginnning of the night (1.2-2.0") we had to move to UVES C queue.
162234 | B
2004-03-18 Again, we have configured the first FLAMES field for the beginning of the night, preset to the field and waited to have a seeing estimate. It turns out that the seeing was very bad (from 1.5 to >2.0" for 0.8" required). We had no choice other than abort and switch to UVES. The switch started at 00:10 and the first UVES OB started at 00:16, so I blame the seeing for the 06:00 min lost.

2004-03-21 Hi!
I (C. Melo) overlooked the README for Tolstoy 171.B-0588(A) and started the HR14 OBs before the HR13 ones which have a higher priority. Tomorrow I'll do the HR13 OBs. Sorry!

2004-03-23 From 2:07-2:13 we switched from UVES to FLAMES to execute the A program of Tolstoy.
I started the 2nd FLAMES configuration of the night (OB: Sext-HR13-5) too late and lost 10 minutes. I increased the exptime of the running exposure from 4500 to 5100 to not let the telescope be idle. Execution loss: 0:10 from 3:40-3:50
From 5:16-5:24 we switched back from UVES to FLAMES as no more FLAMES programs observable.

157532 | A
2004-03-24 From the start of the night until 1:30 there were problems with both the FLAMES and UVES guide probe CCD, which made observations impossible. This was solved around 1:20. See PPRS 12280.
From 1:43-1:50 I started to observe an argus photometric standard following the science argus OB, assuming that in fast acquisition mode the plate would not have to be configured and it would immediately observe the standard with the central argus fibres. But this was not the case; it needed to configure the sky fibres as well. I aborted this OB, and swapped to a Tolstoy OB, whose configuration on plate 1 was waiting to be executed. Execution loss: 0:05.
I forgot to change the central wavelength of the argus standard star (3:17-4:00) to the central wavelength of the science exposure, so OB is useless. Execution loss of 0:43.
From 5:46-5:57 we switched from FLAMES to UVES.
157526 | A
157530 | A
2004-03-25 The first OB of the night had 4500s of GIRAFFE and 450s of UVES. Since the other OBs of this program have 4500s for both, the users must have mistyped the UVES exptime. I noticed this after half an hour when the UVES configuration of the other plate proceeded without problems. With Chris we decided to end the exposure, and start over. Preparation loss from the start of the night, 0:02 to 0:24, i.e. 0:22.
Around 2:30, due to the varying seeing, it was not clear which OB to configure next. Because of this I started a configuration 10min. too late. These 10min were added to the running exposure. Execution loss of 0:10.
At 05:31 a problem occurred during UVES set-up of first exposure after switching from FLAMES. Resolved after restarting the instrument. Time lost: 0:16. See PPRS 12287.
From 5:14-5:24 we switched from FLAMES to UVES, and the minutes after that were spent on presetting and acquiring the new OB, when the error of PPRS 12287 occurred.

Again, we have configured the first FLAMES field for the beginning of the night, preset to the field and waited to have a seeing estimate. It turns out that the seeing was very bad (from 1.5 to >2.0" for 0.8" required). We had no choice other than abort and switch to UVES. The switch started at 00:10 and the first UVES OB started at 00:16, so I blame the seeing for the 06:00 min lost.

From the start of the night until 1:30 there were problems with both the FLAMES and UVES guide probe CCD, which made observations impossible.

General comments
The first OB of the night had 4500s of GIRAFFE and 450s of UVES.
