 * Multimessenger Press Release

Science July 12, 2018. An international team of scientists has found the first evidence of a source of high-energy cosmic neutrinos. This sources is a known blazar, know as TXS 0506+05. Relevant papers are:
  • Multimessenger observations of a flaring blazar coincident with high-energy neutrino IceCube-170922A
  • the IceCube Collaboration, Fermi-LAT, MAGIC, AGILE, ASAS-SN, HAWC, H.E.S.S., INTEGRAL, Kanata, Kiso, Kapteyn, Liverpool Telescope, Subaru, Swift/NuSTAR, VERITAS, VLA/17B-403 teams in Science
  • Neutrino emission from the direction of the blazar TXS 0506+056 prior to the IceCube-170922A alert
  • the IceCube Collaboration with P. Padovani, P. Giommi, B. Arsioli, N. Sahakyan in Science
  • Dissecting the region around IceCube-170922A: the BL Lac TXS 0506+056 as the first cosmic neutrino source
  • P. Padovani, P. Giommi, E. Resconi, T. Glauch, B. Arsioli, N. Sahakyan, M. Huber in the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society
  • IceCube/NSF Press Release
  • ESOBlog interview
  • Media-INAF interview (in Italian)

  • * AVO First Science Press Release

    torus May 28, 2004. The first major discovery to be made with the Virtual Observatory was announced today to the press. The AVO science team discovered 31 previously undetected powerful supermassive black holes in the so-called GOODS (Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey) fields. Here's the paper describing these results.

  • * UVES Investigates the Environment of a Very Remote Galaxy

    torus 11 March, 2002. Observations with ESO's Very Large Telescope (VLT) have enabled an international group of astronomers to study in unprecedented detail the surroundings of a very remote galaxy, almost 12 billion light-years distant. The extremely detailed UVES spectrum of MS 1512-cB58 displays numerous signatures (absorption lines) of intergalactic gas clouds along the line-of-sight . An excess of material near MS 1512-cB58 was found, possible evidence of a young supercluster of galaxies, already at this very early epoch.
