Definitely you need 'ar' (a tool to create and operate with
libraries) in order to install MIDAS from sources as you need
C and Fortran compilers as well.
In my system Solaris 2.6, with the environment variable
PATH set to:
/opt/SUNWspro/bin:/usr/bin:/usr/ccs/bin:/usr/server/bin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/ucb
the 'ar' command is located in:
/usr/ccs/bin/ar
If you have difficulties with the installation of MIDAS from sources
please try first the binary installation for Solaris 2.6, available
in the MIDAS CD-ROM or, the latest version 99NOVpl2.1' in our
ftp account:
ftp://ftp.hq.eso.org/midaspub/99NOV/solaris
