Good morning Ladies and Gentlemen,
In the name of the Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias (IAC), it is a great pleasure for me to welcome you all to the nice island of Tenerife and to this third ``International Conference on Libraries and Information Services in Astronomy.''
As you know, the IAC consists of the Observatorio del Roque de los Muchachos (on the Island of La Palma), the Observatorio del Teide (here in Tenerife) and the Instituto de Astrofísica (in La Laguna, also here in Tenerife). This astronomical complex contains the telescopic installations of more than thirty scientific institutions from all over the world, making it the ``de facto'' European Northern Observatory. For these reasons we need to provide an information service and library at three sites for astronomers with differing backgrounds. I am confident that your work here over the next few days will also help us to achieve these goals effectively and efficiently.
Nowadays, with the overwhelming development of electronic publishing, both librarians and astronomers are challenged to manage a variety of information formats and change their traditional working methods. Librarians and information scientists can play a more significant role for helping the astronomers proceed for the advancement of science.
I would like to wish you great success in this important enterprise.
Unfortunately I will not be able to join you at the conference dinner,
or receive you when you visit the Instituto de Astrofísica next
Friday, because I will be away from the Islands. However, all of us
at IAC are at your service.
Prof. Francisco Sánchez
IAC Director
