********************************************************************* Third and last Announcement ESO Workshop SATELLITES AND STREAMS IN SANTIAGO Santiago de Chile April 13-17, 2015 http://www.eso.org/sci/meetings/2015/Satellites2015.html satellites2015@eso.org ********************************************************************* This is the third and last announcement for the ESO conference "Satellites and Streams in Santiago" to be held in Santiago de Chile on April 13-17, 2015. The venue of the meeting will be the ESO Headquarters in Santiago, Chile. The workshop will cover three interrelated topics: Satellite Systems | Tidal Streams | The Star Cluster-Dwarf Galaxy Interface ABSTRACT SUBMISSION DEADLINE is January 10, 2015 Registration may need to close early in case we reach the venue capacity limit before January 10. http://www.eso.org/sci/php/meetings/Satellites2015/registration-open.html We kindly ask you to circulate the announcement among your colleagues. GOAL OF THIS WORKSHOP This workshop aims at creating a bigger picture of how galactic satellites and tidal streams are interconnected within the framework of hierarchical structure formation. Galactic satellites give us an account of low-mass substructures at the present day. Tidal streams, on the other hand, are tracers of how these substructures disrupt and contribute to their host's assembly. Therefore, taken together, satellites and streams offer a unique opportunity to test and improve our understanding of structure formation -- not just on small scales, but also on large scales by enabling us to measure the shape of the gravitational potential of their hosts. However, satellite properties differ substantially. The discovery of transition objects at the star cluster -- dwarf galaxy interface has blurred the historical distinction between satellite classes, putting at question our understanding of tidal transformation and our census of small stellar systems. Exploring the star cluster-dwarf galaxy interface will be therefore an integral part of this workshop. WORKSHOP FORMAT We envisage the following topical structure for the meeting: 1. Satellite systems as probes of structure formation theories - Ensemble properties - Internal properties - Ultra-faint dwarf galaxies and dwarf spheroidals 2. Tidal streams - Stream detections in the Milky Way, Andromeda, and nearby galaxies - Theoretical interpretation and modeling of the observations 3. The star cluster-dwarf galaxy interface - Filling up the mass-size plane of stellar systems below 1 kpc radius - What defines a galaxy? - The nature of UCDs There will be about 15 keynote talks of ~30 min and ~40 invited and contributed talks of 20 min length.
