SECOND ANNOUNCEMENT Science with the Hubble Space Telescope - II A Scientific Conference co-organised by the Space Telescope Science Institute, Baltimore, MD, USA, and the Space Telescope - European Coordinating Facility, Garching, Germany to be held in the UNESCO Building, Paris, France December 4-8, 1995 TOPICS The meeting will be structured to include major invited and contributed talks in morning sessions, and shorter contributed talks and posters in the parallel afternoon sessions. The Conference will start in the afternoon of Monday, December 4. All major areas of astronomy and astrophysics to which HST results have made significant contributions will be covered. These are expected to include: * Cosmology - in particular, the determination of Ho, the abundance of light elements and the search for dark matter; * Distant galaxies - normal and radio high-redshift galaxies, galaxy evolution, gravitational lenses; * Active galactic nuclei and starbursts - AGNs, Quasars, jets, Seyferts, the galactic environment and merging, starburst galaxies; * Galaxies - nuclei of ellipticals and spirals, mergers, evolution, dwarf galaxies, the interstellar medium of galaxies, dust and gas components; * Supernovae and SN remnants - supernovae, SNR in our and other galaxies; * Interstellar medium - abundances and distribution, clouds, formation and disruption, HII regions; * Stellar astrophysics - star formation, Herbig-Haro objects, outbursts, accretion discs, stellar jets, novae; * Stellar populations and binaries - stellar companions, hot and cool stars, globular clusters, luminosity functions; * Solar system - comets, planetary atmospheres, rings, satellites, outer planets. There will also be an education session at which astronomers and educators will discuss the impact HST results have had on the public, and the contributions which the astronomy community can make to science education in general. This session is tentatively scheduled for the afternoon of Friday, December 8 and the whole day of Saturday, December 9. REGISTRATION Anyone wishing to attend the conference must complete and return the attached Conference Registration Form. The registration deadline is November 1, 1995. REGISTRATION FEE The registration fee is DEM 200 if paid before November 1, 1995. The fee can be paid either by cheque or by bank transfer. Cheques should be made payable to "European Southern Observatory - HST2" and can be issued in German Marks, US Dollars or French Francs. The amount in Dollars is USD 150.00 and in French Francs FRF 700.00. Bank transfers should be made to European Southern Observatory's Account No. 21 02 002 with the Commerzbank Muenchen (bank code 700 400 41) and should contain the name of the participant and the reference "HST2". Please note that we are not responsible for possible banking fees and therefore participants should make sure that we receive the full amount. Registrations without accompanying payment will not be accepted. After November 1, if space is still available for late registrations, the fee will be DEM 300.00 (USD 225.00, FRF 1050.00). CONTRIBUTED PAPERS AND POSTERS Participants who wish to present an oral paper or a poster should submit an abstract of their contribution before September 22, 1995. The abstract should be sent by electronic mail to hst2@eso.org and should indicate whether an oral or a poster presentation is preferred. The presenting author must be the first author on the abstract. The Scientific Organizing Committee may not accept all papers and may decide whether accepted papers will be presented orally or as posters. PROCEEDINGS The Proceedings of the conference will be published by the Space Telescope Science Institute and each registered participant will receive a copy. HOTEL ACCOMMODATION Block reservations have been made in the hotels listed below. Participants who would like to make use of this arrangement should return the attached Accommodation Request Form together with the Registration Form by October 13, 1995.
