	   APPLICATION FOR FUNDS TO ATTEND
LIBRARY AND INFORMATION SERVICES IN ASTRONOMY IV
      CHARLES UNIVERSITY, PRAGUE, CZECH REPUBLIC
		 July 2 - 5, 2002

The Friends of LISA IV (FOL IV) Committee is working to raise funds
from publishers, institutions and individuals to assist those
librarians who wish to attend LISA IV but are unable to receive full
assistance from their institution. We hope to collect sufficient funds
to assist with housing in Prague, provide a small per diem, assist
with the registration fee and, in some cases, assist with travel
expenses. Applications for financial aid should be received by 12
March 2002. Decisions will be made by 26 March 2002.

Housing and per diem assistance (in Euros) will be given to recipients
upon arrival at the conference; registration assistance will be paid
directly to the conference organizers. In cases where we are able to
provide travel assistance, it is our intention to send the funds via
wire transfer to your institution's bank before the end of May. If
you are applying for travel assistance, please provide the requested
bank routing information on the application form below.

The Local Organizing Committee has reserved 20 double rooms (40 beds)
in Charles University dormitories close to the conference hall. The
cost of these rooms is very low, approximately 5 US$/night. Your
institution may be able to pay for your lodging at that price.

Applications for FOL IV support may be sent via e-mail, fax or postal
mail, but e-mail or fax are preferred. We will acknowledge the
receipt of all applications, so if you do NOT receive an
acknowledgement please contact us. Address all applications to:

IMPORTANT NOTE ON RECIPROCAL AGREEMENTS. Charles University and the
Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic have a number of bilateral,
reciprocal agreements for visiting and exchange of professionals and
students. These agreements work on the "first come, first served"
principle. There are about 200 agreements between the Charles
University Prague and other universities in the world, including some
in Russia, Ukraine, India, China, Mexico; the Academy of Sciences of
the Czech Republic has the same number of agreements. There are two
Web sites listing (in Czech) the participants in these agreements:

For Charles University reciprocal programs:
http://www.cuni.cz/cuni/ruk/zahran/dohody/seznam.php.cs
For Academy of Science of the Czech Republic reciprocal programs:
http://www.cas.cz/zahr_odbor/pril1.htm

If you contact either Marek (wolf@beba.cesnet.cz) or Radka Svaskova
(bibl@sunkl.asu.cas.cz), they will be glad to assist you in finding
out about such arrangements. If your institution is listed, inquire
first about this possiblilty at your home institution's "Department of
International Relations" (or something similar). You will need to
fill out various forms to fulfill the bureaucratic requirements of the
application process. People who receive these grants will get money
for lodging and per diem on arrival in Prague; no travel funds are
available.

People who have pre-registered for LISA IV from the following
institutions should contact Marek or Radka immediately, as these
institutions ARE among those with reciprocal agreements: Russian
Academy of Sciences, Indian National Science Academy, Kyoto
University, Chinese Academy of Sciences.

VERY IMPORTANT: the deadline for application for funds through the
reciprocal agreements is usually three months before the departure
date, which means around the end of March for LISA IV.

Contact Marek Wolf (wolf@beba.cesnet.cz) or Radka Svaskova
(bibl@sunkl.asu.cas.cz) for information about financial support
through reciprocal agreements.
