Old Astronomical Books in the Library of Gothard Observatory

The historical Gothard collection of library and scientific-technical instruments is a valuable inheritance of the Gothard Observatory. This makes it possible to provide a cultural and historical window to the development of scientific knowledge and thinking. The Gothard Observatory is eager to share the wonders this rich scientific treasury with collegauges of the ages of Networked Information.

Founder

Eugen von Gothard (1857-1909) was a prominent representative of the Hungarian scientific progress in the last two decades of the 19th century. He established his private observatory in 1881 and till the turn of the 20th century continued a remarkable career as a gentleman astronomer in the best tradition of Europe. The work at Herény Observatory was chiefly in the field of astronomical photography and astrospectroscopy and he made many important discoveries by these method.

Library

Besides his observational work, he found great pleasure in collecting old astronomical books. In his library the several curiosity of books were among the periodicals, books and volumes of his period. Inheritance of Gothard the library contained 2964 units of books, periodicals, volumes, astronomical atlases and catalogue in 1918.
