Larsen General Description ------------------- This is a programme to image globular clusters in the merger remnant NGC 1316. We have previously obtained VIMOS pre-imaging and spectra of clusters in this galaxy and in this programme we carry out deep imaging in the Ks band of one of the VIMOS quadrants with HAWK-I to further constrain ages, metallicities and spatial distributions of different star cluster populations. Observations should be carried out as sequences of B-T-T-B-T-T-B .. where 'B' are Background fields and 'T' are target fields. The 'B' and 'T' observations should have identical exposure times of NDIT=10 and DIT=10 s. A random offset between -15..+15 arcsec should be applied to the pointing before every exposure. We aim for a total of 3 hours of integration time on-target (i.e. 108 observations of 10x10 s) and 1.5 hours on sky (i.e. 54 observations of 10x10 s) in a seeing of 0.80" or better. These can be grouped together in OBs of 16 target and 8 background exposures, each lasting one hour. If OBs are executed non-consecutively, it would be good to have one 'B' exposure both at the beginning and at the end. This would add a total of 15 min to the execution time in the worst case (7 OBs executed non-consecutively) - if this is unacceptable to the SV team, an alternative would be to simply replace the last 'T' exposure in each OB with a 'B' exposure. Our target field is centred at (RA, Dec)_2000 = (03:22:59, -37:10:00). Note: This is *not* centered on the galaxy nucleus, but keeping the nucleus near one corner of the HAWK-I FOV. A good location for the background field would be about 20 arcmin North of the target field, i.e. roughly centred at (RA, Dec)_2000 = (03:23:00, -36:50) Waiver requests --------------- N/A Critical Observing Condition Constraints ---------------------------------------- See under "Special Calibration Information" below Time-Critical Aspects --------------------- N/A Special Execution Requirements ------------------------------ See under "Special Calibration Information" below Special Calibration Information ------------------------------- We request that at least one OB (can be less than one hour long, e.g. 47 min; see below) is executed under photometric conditions, immediately pre/superceded by standard star observations at similar airmass. ToO information --------------- N/A P.I. email ---------- larsen@astro.uu.nl Estimated execution time ------------------------ Per OB: Telescope preset = 6 min Target acq. = 3 min Integration = 10 x 10s x 24 = 40 min Read-out = 10 x 24 x 0.03 min = 7.2 min Offset = 24 x 0.15 min = 3.6 min --------------------------------------------- Total = 59.8 min 6 OBs like this amount to 160 min of science time + 80 min of sky. The remaining 20 + 10 min require an OB of 47 min Thus, the estimated total is 6 hrs 46 min
