Basic information ----------------- Proposal ID = 60.A-9284 Instrument = HAWK-I Priority class = N/A Approved execution time = 1h Type = Science Verification P.I. = Mark Gieles Target = NGC7793 and M83 (RA, Dec) = 23h57m49.8s -32d35m28s (NGC7793) 13h37m00.9s -29d51m56s (M83) General Description ------------------- This programs aims at observing young star clusters and star forming regions in nearby spiral galaxies. Our targets are NGC7793 and M83. These galaxies are at similar distances, so the observing strategy should be identical. We want observations in Y, J, H, K and Br_gamma, with on target exposure times (per galaxy): Y,J,H,K: 10 min in each band (5 min target + 5 min sky) Br_gamma: 20 min (10 min target + 10 min sky) Observations should be carried out as sequences of B-T-T-B-T-T-B .. where 'B' are Background fields and 'T' are target fields. The single 'B' and 'T' observations should have identical exposure times of NDIT= 10 sec and DIT= 6 for each filter and each target. For the sky subtraction we have selected empty regions located at some distances from the galaxies. In order to avoid having a bright star in the field, we would prefer to use fixed offsets: NGC7793: 15 arcmin away from the target exactly to the North-East direction (i.e. -15, +15) M83: 18 arcmin to the West and 6 arcmin to the North at the same time (i.e. +18,+6) For the dithering we would like to use 40" jitter box - the same for all the targets. We aim for a total of 30 min of integration time on-target and 30 min on sky for each galaxy in a seeing of 0.80" or better.
