Infrared-visual crossfade, centre of the Milky Way (Annotated)

Starting with a visible light view of a small region close to the centre of our Milky Way, created from the Digitized Sky Survey 2 images, we gradually fade into the VISTA infrared view of the same area of sky. Huge numbers of previously unseen red stars appear as the effects of the dust are reduced.
