October 2014

Dear Fellow Communicators,

October in Munich means two things: Oktoberfest (which paradoxically mostly is in September :), and Open House Day at ESO Headquarters! If you happen to be in Munich, Germany on 11 October come and visit us and take part in the activities we have prepared for you. Check out the programme here.

We are working on lots of exciting projects at the moment. Two have not yet been launched — a new layout for the ESO webpage and a website for the ESO Supernova — Planetarium and Visitor Centre. Stay tuned; we look forward to showing them to you in the next few weeks!

If you are curious to see what is going on at our sites, you can now spy on us thanks to our webcams. The live transmission from the webcams offers multiple streams that are not to be missed — some best at night, some best during the day. As usual we are happy to share with you: you are free to embed the webcam images on your web pages: just use the URL of the product.

On another note, if your centre or institution has a souvenir shop, we invite you to put our Community Coordinator, Oana Sandu, in touch with your sales or marketing person to explore possible collaborations. We have lots of outreach products that visitors would like to own! Check our ESOshop catalogue for an overview of the products and the prices (at large volumes the price is the production price for us).

Finally, have you registered in the International Astronomical Union Directory for World Astronomy yet? It is a fantastic opportunity to make your organisation known worldwide, to connect with other amateur astronomers or to promote your outreach events!

By signing up to the directory your organisation will also qualify to suggest names for exoplanets in the #NameExoWorlds contest. Read more here.

Let’s reach new heights in astronomy together,

Lars Lindberg Christensen (lars@eso.org)
Head, ESO education and Public Outreach Department (ePOD)
