Dear Fellow Communicators,
The big day for us has come! For more than two years we have been working towards 5 October 2012 — which marks 50 years to the day since ESO’s convention was signed. Next Friday — on 5 October itself — you have the opportunity to offer a unique experience to your friends, colleagues or to your public. And all you need is an internet connection.
On this day we invite you to take advantage of a free live streaming from Paranal Observatory in Chile, as well as a series of talks streamed over the internet from ESO astronomers. Invite people to your venues and connect to our online channel.
For the first time in ESO’s history, the VLT will be pointed towards an object in the sky selected by members of the public as part of the Choose What the VLT Observes competition. Brigitte Bailleul, from France, won the Tweet Your Way to the VLT! competition, and will travel to the Paranal Observatory in Chile to help make the observations. The live link to Paranal will show the observations and the telescopes on the mountaintop, in the stunning landscape of the Atacama Desert, letting viewers join Brigitte on her trip of a lifetime.
An overview of the day is provided on this webpage.
Among the highlights will be:
- Live observations of the Thor’s Helmet Nebula, winner of the “Choose what the VLT observes” competition
- Talks by ESO’s Director General, Dr. J and other experts
- Live link to the Paranal platform
If you want to see what other venues are organising, check the registred AwESOme Universe venues and anniversary events’ venues.
If you are making plans for next year, don’t forget to book your calendar for the next Communicating Astronomy with the Public (CAP) conference, which will take place on 14–18 October 2013 in Warsaw. More details here soon.
Let’s reach new heights in astronomy together,
