August 2012

Dear Fellow Communicators,

Since last issue of this Newsletter, we have launched two anniversary public competitions with prizes to die for: a trip to Paranal Observatory in Chile to observe, and the chance to be the first member of the public ever to decide what the Very Large Telescope (VLT) observes.

Your visitors, followers, fans and friends will love you for telling them about this opportunity so don't miss the chance to prove to your audiences that it's worth keeping in touch with you. The competition is open until the end of August! Access the links below:

For more information, see our press release.

Our sixth special anniversary episode of the ESOcast, Catching Light was released this month. It describes how state-of-the-art cameras and spectrographs help ESO’s powerful telescopes collect and analyse the faint light from the distant Universe.

The ESO caps are also back in the shop. Don’t forget that you can re-sell our products at a profit, by placing bulk orders in the ESOshop and the Hubbleshop.

For a part of this month you will find us in Beijing, China, at the International Astronomical Union General Assembly. Look out for the ESO stand in the exhibition area!

If you were among ESA/Hubble’s first 100 000 Facebook friends and you participated in the mosaic picture campaign, then check our surprise here.

Let’s reach new heights in astronomy together,

Lars Lindberg Christensen (lars@eso.org)
Head, ESO education and Public Outreach Department (ePOD)
