February 2012

Dear fellow communicators,

We have sent out calls to anyone interested in hosting an ESO 50th anniversary exhibition or organising a dedicated event, for which we can offer a limited number of grants. If you want to know more, contact us at information@eso.org to be added to the relevant mailing lists.

At the beginning of February, a part of our team ventured to the Atacama Desert to film for the Anniversary documentary. It was a marvellous trip and a great feeling to see the movie starting to come together. Look out for the first rough cut of chapter 1 which will be released as an ESOcast episode in March.

This month we also had an all-hands international (and intercultural) meeting with our Science Outreach Network representatives. We evaluated the progress of the past year and planned our future local outreach activities. Check the link above to see who is representing ESO in your country and don’t hesitate to get in touch with them!

In the area of partnerships, we would like to wish a starry welcome to Babak Tafreshi to our network of ESO Photo Ambassadors! Babak is the founder and director of The World At Night (TWAN) programme, an international project to produce and present stunning night-sky images above various distinctive landscapes from all around the world. He has already visited our sites in Chile and made some stunning photos, to be released soon!

But if you are thinking of visiting us yourself, be sure to check this first, as we’ve updated our weekend visits schedule at our sites in Chile.

We’d like to take the opportunity to direct your attention to some of our newest merchandise in the ESOshop. This elegant ballpoint pen from the renowned German brand LAMY is the perfect gift for an astronomer, or anyone with a passion for astronomy.  And if winter is giving you trouble, hurry and get an ESO fleece branded with the anniversary logo. We are quickly running out! And last week, the book, Treasures of the Southern Sky, arrived at our Headquarters and is now available in our online shop. The book will provide you with intriguing facts and useful information about the deep sky wonders south of the celestial equator — a great tool to use for introducing the sky to your audiences.

Let’s reach new heights in astronomy together,

Lars Lindberg Christensen (lars@eso.org)
Head ESO education and Public Outreach Department (ePOD)
