Dear fellow communicators,
We’re very happy to have you back with us after the holidays. We hope you had a fantastic and fun time over Christmas and we would like to wish you and your families a Happy New Year! At ePOD we had a surprise over Christmas when Comet Lovejoy decided to defy the forces of nature and survive its solar swing-by. Some of you will have had a surprise from us as well, as our revamped distribution system has allowed us to target our distribution of print products better — a big dream come true for us, and fully interlinked with the rest of our technical infrastructure.
We hope you are back with fully charged batteries, because there is an exciting year ahead of us.
The year 2012 began for us with the launch of ESO’s 50th Anniversary programme! This will be a year-long celebration that will take you on a journey to discover Europe’s dream of observing the southern skies. But don’t just sit back and relax, because we would like you to play an active role in this! Take advantage of this amazing milestone in European ground-based astronomy and join us in celebrating ESO’s first 50 years. We have several events through which you can get your public excited about astronomy. A full list is provided here. Should you be interested in participating, write us at information@eso.org
But these are just our plans. If you wish to celebrate European astronomy in your own way, don’t let us stop you! Drop us a note at the same email address so that we can include your activity dedicated to ESO’s anniversary in our calendar of events. And if we see a way in which we can help you, we’ll gladly do so.
And to finish off, for our friends out there who have witnessed all or part of ESO’s 50-year journey, you can now share your photo memories with us via our Your ESO Pictures Flickr Group. Check it out.
Let’s reach new heights in astronomy together,
Lars Lindberg Christensen (lars@eso.org)
