eso9815 — Organisation Release
Paranal - April 1998
30 April 1998
This is another video clip with recent footage from the Paranal Observatory, illustrating the continuing progress of the VLT project. It was obtained in mid-April 1998 by the ESO EPR Video Team and forms part of the video tape ( UT1-FLE-VNR1 ) with selected video material for broadcast use, issued in connection with the VLT First Light Event.
This video clip shows scenes from the Paranal Observatory, obtained on April 10 - 15, 1998.
The video starts with some aerial sequences, obtained from a low-flying helicopter. The Base Camp is seen in front of the Paranal mountain and the enclosures for the individual 8.2-m Unit Telescopes are shown in close-up.
Then follow some scenes from the integration work on Unit Telescope no. 1 (UT1) - see also the photos included in UT1 First Light Event Photos - Second Set, just published on the web. These video clips concern in particular the handling of the large and fragile Zerodur mirror and its supporting cell.
At the end is shown an evening shot with the telescope enclosure profiles against a clear sky.
This is the caption to ESO Press Video eso9815.
These sequences may be reproduced, if credit is given to the European Southern Observatory. More extensive extracts from the available video coverage, suitable for transmission and in full professional quality (Betacam, etc.), may be obtained by TV companies upon request; please contact the ESO EPR Department for more details.
