ALMA antennas

The 12-metre dishes of these ALMA radio telescopes appear to tower over the rugged, desert terrain of the Chajnantor Plateau in this shot captured 5000 metres above sea level, high in the Andes. The ALMA site, some 50 kilometres east of San Pedro de Atacama in northern Chile, is in one of the driest places on Earth.
