La Silla in the desert
The La Silla observatory, visible on the distant summit, is locate in a semi-desert region 100km North of the La Serena city. While this area is very dry most of the year, a few days of rain are sufficient for the scarce plants to develop. They will blossom, and soon after return to their dry, dead-looking state.
