EMMI on the NTT

EMMI, the "ESO Multi-Mode Instrument" was one of the 3 instruments installed on the NTT on La Silla. It was operated from 1990 until 2008. This very versatile camera has two sides, each one optimised for observations either in the red or in the blue light. The sides can be identified by the colour of the cover ; on the photo, the blue side is well visible, while the red one is partially hidden by the technician. By adjusting internal wheels, the instrument can be re-configured to take images, low resolution spectra, or high resolution spectra (that is, dispersing the light along its wavelength in a rainbow-like fashion). Thanks to its versatility, EMMI has been the workhorse of ESO for almost two decades.
