NTT deep field image of "empty" sky

The new picture from the NTT is the "deepest" view into the distant regions of the Universe ever obtained with any ground-or space-based telescope. It shows enormous number of extremely faint and remote galaxies. More than 97% of the objects in the image are galaxies.

Using a high-quality CCD detector in the ESO Multi-Mode Instrument (EMMI) forty-one exposures of this field were collected, with a total observing time of 6 hours 50 minutes.
