Dome construction for the ESO 3.6-metre telescope

Taken in 1975, this image shows the first beam of the dome that was constructed for the ESO 3.6-metre Telescope at La Silla. The telescope is now home to the world's foremost extrasolar planet hunter: High Accuracy Radial velocity Planet Searcher (HARPS), a spectrograph with unrivalled precision.
