Beneath the surface of Paranal

Part of the ingenuity of ESO's Very Large Telescope (VLT) in Chile is to work as an interferometer, combining the observing power of several telescopes. ESO Representative in Chile, Massimo Tarenghi, stands in the VLT Interferometric Tunnel — situated beneath the surface at Paranal Observatory — where light from some or all of the telescopes above can be cleverly processed.
