Residencia airglow

Airglow is a natural phenomenon caused by several processes in the upper atmosphere, from the de-ionizing of atoms to cosmic rays. This effect causes a faint glow across the sky seen only on very dark and clear nights. Here the orange airglow is illuminating the Paranal Residencia below, from which two neighbouring galaxies, the Small and Large Magellanic Clouds, are visible.
