VLT coating plant: from sea to land

The VLT coating plant was loaded directly from the ship unto a special six-axle carriage with enough wheels to distribute the great load over an area sufficiently large to avoid problems when traveling on the comparatively soft gravel roads in the desert. It was pulled by a powerful truck and accompanied all the way to Paranal by officials who cleared the road wherever needed. Here the transport negotiates the waterfront in the city of Antofagasta.
