The Milky Way seen from the Atacama Desert

The Milky Way captured at twilight from the Atacama Desert, home of the ESO observatories since the 1960´s, and selected site for the Extremely Large Telescope (ELT), the world´s biggest eye on the sky. Right above the rock at the centre of the picture, the Large Magellanic Cloud, a neighbourhood galaxy of the Milky Way is visible. Above this, the reddish spot of the bright Carina Nebula is visible. On the plan of the Milky Way, toward left, the Southern Cross with the Coal Sack can also be spotted, followed by two bright stars, respectively Beta and Alpha Centauri.
