Infrared/visible crossfade of the Orion Nebula

This sequence compares the new infrared image of the Orion Nebula from the VISTA telescope with a picture of the same part of the sky imaged in visible light. The longer wavelength light observed by VISTA can penetrate the dusty regions of the nebula and expose many young stars that are normally invisible and also reveal many curious features created by very young stars and the jets that they expel at typical speeds of 700 000 km/hour.
