Science data reduction

The QC group processes a stream of science-grade data products for selected VLT instruments. They are created using certified pipelines and certified master calibrations. Find an overview of the current streams here.

MUSE science products

MUSE science data products, processed as Internal Data Products by the Quality Control Group at ESO, are available covering the entire data history. They can be downloaded from the phase3 archive interface.

Raw SCIENCE data types

The MUSE science data types are identified by the DPR TYPE keyword of the FITS headers. Find information about the general MUSE data format here. The information

The SCIENCE further split into two different observing modes: Wide Field Mode (WFM) and Narrow Field Mode (NFM, commissioned in 2018). The WFM observations can be taken with Adaptive Optics system (AO) or without (NOAO). The NFM data are only taken with AO.

Processing of MUSE science data is done in few steps, using different recipes at each step. To obtain final product, all processing steps have to be applied.

frame recipe description products
SCIENCE, sky step1: muse_scibasic bias subtraction, flat-fielding correction, wavelength-calibration, assigns 3D coordinates to each CCD-based pixel, creating a pixel table for each exposure PIXTABLE_SKY
SCIENCE, sky step2: muse_create_sky merging of pixel tables from all IFUs of each exposure, creating night sky model from selected, empty pixels, image reconstruction SKY_SPECTRUM, SKY_LINES, SKY_CONTINUUM, IMAGE_FOV
SCIENCE, object step1: muse_scibasic as above PIXTABLE_OBJECT
SCIENCE, object step2: muse_scipost merging of pixel tables from all IFUs of each exposure, flux calibration, sky subtraction, resampling into a datacube, image reconstruction DATACUBE_FINAL, IMAGE_FOV, PIXTABLE_REDUCED
SCIENCE, object step3: muse_exp_align computing coordinate offset for each input FOV image with respect to a reference OFFSET_LIST
SCIENCE, object step4: muse_exp_combine combining several exposures into one datacube DATACUBE_FINAL, IMAGE_FOV, PIXTABLE_COMBINED

The MUSE calibration scheme, including SCIENCE data reduction, is shown here.
