Parallel Lives:  The Symbiotic Growth of Galaxies and Supermassive Black Holes

Over the last decade our understanding of the growth of galaxies and
supermassive black holes has evolved enormously as a result of X-ray,
infrared, and submillimeter surveys.  A cohesive story of their
parallel evolution is beginning to emerge, though there are still big
gaps in our understanding. I will describe our current picture and how
it may change in the future.
